CM 516 Automation in Construction

This course provides students with an overview of fundamental concepts in the 4th industrial revolution in construction projects (i.e., Construction 4.0). The course introduces application and management of state-of-the-art digital technologies and automated systems in all stages of the construction life cycle from initial planning and design, through construction of the facility, its operation and maintenance, to the eventual dismantling and recycling of buildings and engineering structures. The first part of the course focuses on application of cutting-edge digital technologies including BIM- and cloud-based project management, visual and virtual progress monitoring, digital fabrication and 3D printing, robotics, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), sensors, LiDAR systems, photogrammetry, and Blockchain technology in construction industry. The second part of the course focuses on how automation will transform the construction industry and best ways to plan and prepare for the digital revolution. Topics including cybersecurity issues, technological unemployment, and future of work in digital era will be discussed.
