Master of Science in Chemical Biology

Chemical Biology Curriculum

The Master of Science in Chemical Biology program at Stevens gives students unparalleled preparation for a range of satisfying careers in research, medicine, and industry with a focus on molecular, cellular and computational methodologies. Chemical Biology is the application of chemistry to the understanding and utilization of biological phenomena. Chemical biology represents an approach to understanding biology through the underlying chemical interactions of biological macromolecules and provides students with the essential tools to reveal the logic of how biological systems operate as well as engineering changes in those systems.  Examples of course content include cell and molecular biology, bioanalytical techniques and genetics.  The program is the first chemical biology program that was founded in the U.S. and our historical presence in the field serves students well, both while they are at Stevens and beyond graduation.  Along with advanced theoretical studies, students pursue original research in world-class laboratories under the mentorship of leading experts in the field and acquire the in-depth lab experience that top employers look for and make connections in pharma, medicine and academia that will help thrive career advancement.

Thirty graduate credits in an approved plan of study, including 12 credits of core courses, are required for the Master of Science degree. Students need 18 technical elective credits which includes 6 unrestricted elective credits including courses in biomedical engineering.  Research is strongly encouraged for the master's degree program, either as a Special Research Problem (BIO 800 or CH 800) or a Master's Thesis (BIO 900 or CH 900), and is counted towards the 30 credits required for the degree.  Students need to complete two semesters of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Seminar (CH 700) for 0 credits.  Students are encouraged to choose their electives toward fulfillment of a graduate certificate especially Drug Discovery or Analytical Chemistry.
