HST 355 Technology and Medicine

This is a course on the history and sociology of medicine. The course explores the historiographical and theoretical arguments in the study of medical technology. Topics include the development of medical technologies (dialysis, x-ray), the human body as technology, disability and technology, and theoretical arguments about tinkering, black-boxed technology, and the human/technology interface (cyborgs). Students are expected to read widely and be able to discuss high-level issues both verbally and in writing.
