Master of Science in Chemistry
The Master of Science in Chemistry program gives students preparation for a range of satisfying careers in chemistry towards interdisciplinary research and application with molecular, cellular and computational perspectives. Chemistry is a field of study which seeks to describe the properties, composition, structure and process of formation of all things that make up the universe. Students work closely and learn from recognized leaders in the field, receive rigorous theoretical instruction, interdisciplinary training and exposure to experimental methods, honing lab and research skills in the various disciplines of chemistry, including organic, analytical, inorganic, physical and biochemistry with various research and mentorship opportunities. Graduates go on to thrive in academia, chemical industry, pharma, medicine in a range of expanding opportunities in chemistry.
Thirty graduate credits in an approved plan of study, including 12 credits of core courses, are required for the Master of Science degree. Students need 18 technical elective credits which includes 6 unrestricted credits. Research is strongly encouraged and can be included in the master’s degree program, either as a Special Research Problem (CH 800) or a Master’s Thesis (CH 900), and counted towards the 30 credits required for the degree. Students need to complete two semesters of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Seminar (CH 700) for 0 credits. Students are encouraged to choose their electives toward fulfillment of a graduate certificate, especially Drug Discovery, Computational Chemistry & Biology or Analytical Chemistry.
