HLI 347 Octavia Butler

Octavia E. Butler (1947 – 2006) is one of the most celebrated science fiction writers of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the most well-known African American writer in the genre. Butler’s fiction is now squarely at the center of American literature and public discourse. Butler is best known for her seminal time-travel novel on American slavery, Kindred (1979), as well as her dystopian Parables (1993, 1998) novels. This class will endeavor to understand Butler’s social and political philosophy, as well as her relevance to the present-day. This class may also include adaptations of her novels in other media, such as television series and graphic novels.
