HMU 451 Music Business II

As the second course in the Music Business series, this course will delve into the inner workings of the modern-day music industry. Students will learn through an advanced focus including: artist development, management, marketing, contractual agreements (publishing, recording, collaborator, producer), 360 record deals, songwriting, sampling, streaming, analytics, compensation models, and the Do-It-Yourself Artist. The first half of the semester will culminate with a presentation of possible career paths and an introduction to an artist release plan. Students in the second half of the semester will create an artist marketing and project release plan. Students will be responsible to form groups and develop then present a full artist release strategy and plan. Students will have the opportunity to present and pitch the artist project to a panel of guest industry executives in a "mock A&R pitching" session. This will simulate the real world of how artists are pitched and signed.
