HPL 365 Philosophy of Sex and Gender

The gendered nature of human beings raises a number of philosophical problems, most notably the question whether gender identity is determined socially or biologically. The class analyzes some of the fundamental approaches to the theory of sexuality, feminism, and the construction of masculinity, as well as approaches in trans studies which argue against the binary nature of gender. The class also addresses the social and political dimensions of sex and gender insofar as they intersect with race, privilege, and power and raise issues concerning individual and reproductive rights.
