HST 137 Introduction to Environmental Studies
This course introduces students to the main themes, questions, and methodologies of environmental studies. Environmental studies is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interaction between human and natural systems and the connection between science, technology, and policy. By listening to a range of scholars in a variety of disciplines, and paying close attention to finding and amplifying underrepresented people and topics, we can come to understand how humans come to know, interact with, and shape the environments in which they live. Themes to be explored will include but are not limited to: race, health, and the environment (environmental racism/justice); Indigenous land sovereignty and land relations; conservation and colonialism; capitalism and the green economy; gender and environmental rhetoric (environmental sexism/naturalism); gender specific climate change vulnerabilities.
