ME 618 Principles of Energy Conversion and Renewable Energy

This course introduces fundamental principles of energy conversion, and renewable energy. It is built upon students’ undergraduate background in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. The relevant topics of energy conversion and renewable energy that will be presented are steam power plants, gas turbines, nuclear power, geothermal energy, ocean thermal converters, hydropower and hydraulic turbines, wind energy, solar energy resources, concentering solar power (CSP), photovoltaics, bioenergy, fuel cells, and energy storage technologies. The course also provides a quantitative yet accessible overview of engineering practice for renewable energy generation and distribution, and consequent technologies that will transform our energy supply systems over the coming years.
