BIO 392 Microbiology

This course explores the microbial world, including bacteria, viruses, and eukaryotic microorganisms. Emphasis is placed on bacteria by covering fundamental concepts related to their cell structure and function, metabolism, genetics, and pathogenesis. Beneficial microbe-host interactions (microbiome) will be discussed as well as the principles of prevention and control of infection diseases. Host defenses against microbial invasion will be also presented. The contribution of microbes to the environment and to the biotechnology sectors will be introduced. Concurrent laboratory exercises develop techniques in the preparation, handling, and identification of microbial cultures.
