BME 505 Biomaterials
Intended to serve as an intermediate level course of materials sciences to graduate/upper class undergraduate students of biomedical engineering, this course first reviews the materials properties relevant to the application to the human body. It goes on to discuss different types of materials and then the possible human body reactions with foreign materials, as well as the degradation of these materials in the human body. The course then discusses the use of biomaterials for various implants and devices used for soft tissue and hard tissue repair, drug delivery, artificial organs, and elements of tissue engineering. The course is concluded with the discussion on possible failures of implant/devices caused by various biomaterials.
