HMU 101 History of European Music I

The first semester of the History of European Music begins with a brief introduction to the music of ancient civilizations and continues through the periods of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque. The course addresses the historical development of the musical characteristics, styles, techniques, instruments, and compositions in each period within the context of humanities including philosophy, religion, politics, arts, technology, and daily life. Students will acquire an understanding and recognition of the development of polyphony and diverse musical styles through listening and analysis to be able to make well founded critical and aesthetic judgements applied to today’s musical practices.
