HLI 223 Introduction to Fiction Writing

This course is a beginner’s workshop in the creation of fiction. Students examine issues such as narrative structure, character, time and place, point of view, and plot. The course explores the relationship between writing as a craft and writing as a process. The impact of the computer on writing may be examined. Students read works of fiction and theories of fiction and learn to shape their own work accordingly. Student writing will consist of works of short prose, and the classroom atmosphere will remain at all times light-hearted and supportive, with the understanding that students are young writers still developing their craft.
