HLI 229 Nature Writing: Identity and Place

In this course, students will explore how creative writing about the natural world engages with issues of environmental and social justice. Students will consider questions like: How do diverse artists define nature? Are urban spaces part of nature? How are people made to feel like they belong or don’t belong in certain spaces? How do various cultural and intellectual traditions frame the ethics of stewardship and care? Additionally, students will study the craft of nature writing and compose original creative work in a variety of styles and forms, thus exploring their own identity and relationship to place.
