HMU 310 Music Composition

Music Composition will provide a platform and a community for new and experienced music-makers to consider and create original work in a variety of contexts and scopes. Students will be provided with a variety of analytical approaches and techniques to complete short assignments analyzing musical form and content. The class will be given opportunities to create their own original music, both on smaller and larger scale projects. Discussions and examples of different notation practices will help students to convey their musical ideas and instructions to others using a variety of compositional communication methods (staff notation, text instructions, track cues, etc.). Coursework will culminate in a final project composition for the live or livestreaming performance of an original work. Overall, this course will invite students to consider acoustic instruments and electronic technologies as equally integrated and accessible in their compositional practice across different genres and traditions.
